Why Hypertension the silent killer and how you can manage your blood pressure

Prakash (Name Changed) was driving to work on a Wednesday morning. A senior executive in an Ad agency Prakash was not new to stress and deadlines.  He was stuck in a jam in the peak hour but his mind was somewhere else.  The week had been a rough one with 3 client deliverables due and he was already struggling to meet them. As he was sitting there planning his day, he felt his head spin and he could not see very clearly. He blinked his eyes and rubbed his eye lids hoping it was just dryness in his contact lenses due to the car AC. Soon he was having difficulty in breathing. Nauseous, he rolled down his windows and tried to loosen his shirt. Soon he was sweating profusely and there was shooting pain through his temples. Prakash knew he was in trouble but had the common sense to call out to the car next to him for help. A passerby notified the traffic police and a good Samaritan rung up the ambulance service. Prakash had little recollection of what happened next but soon he was saved in time due to the timeliness of the call and the emergency services who rushed him to hospital in time.

What Prakash experienced was a spike in his blood pressure and is sometimes fatal. If not controlled can lead to heart failure and ischaemic heart disease, stroke, and renal failure. Luckily for him it was managed properly and he was restored to nomal life and since then has managed his blood pressure well.

According to statistics almost one in three people are hypertensive in urban India. The most dangerous part of this condition is that it is non-symptomatic. So in a sense there is no warning before the spike and hence there is need for continuous monitoring and management. Normal blood pressure is 120-130/80 mm Hg. Any reading above 140/80 mm HG can be considered hypertensive.

Hypertension also increases the risk to development of Cardio Vascular Disease. The increased health risk of obesity is most marked when excess fat is mainly in abdomen rather than on hips or thighs. Asians are more prone to metabolic Syndrome with high risk of developing Diabetes and subsequently hypertension, heart disease or stroke. A waist measurement of 90 cms or above for (Asian) men and 80 cm or above for Asian (Women) is a significant health risk.

Management of Hypertension

Like adage goes “Prevention is better than Cure”. In case of Hypertension it is the only way to handle the condition. In Prakash’s case his family doctor advised him to do the following

  1. Lifestyle changes – Making Healthy Lifestyle changes will help improve as well as reverse the condition. These include eating fresh food, avoiding junk food, sleeping and waking up on time.
  2. Reduce Weight -Achieving target weight is the best treatment for treating high blood pressure -Blood pressure rises as body weight increases. To lose weight it’s best to work out combination of eating right, maintaining portion control and being more physically active. Keep a watch on his BMI (Body mass index) and WC(Waist circumference).
  3. To Quit or reduce smoking
  4. Reduce dietary salt intake
  5. Increase physical activity
  6. Reduce alcohol consumption
  7. Follow De-Stressing techniques especially meditation, yoga and breathing exercise.

If left controlled despite all these changes, the doctors would recommend Anti-Hypertensive drugs to control the condition. It is very important that one does not self-medicate rather they should listen to the advice of the physician.
