Public Health spending in India among the lowest in the world

Did you know that 80 % of the healthcare spend in India comes from the private sector?

So next time you see a Government commercial for roads and the Delhi metro you might be tempted to ask why a country of this size with a population of more than a billion covers only 20 % of the healthcare budget for the nation ?

This spend puts us as among the lowest in the world. This fact came from a report published by Accenture, Delivering e-health in India — Analysis and Recommendations. The report goes on to say how the focus of the Indian Government has been on Health Infrastructure but little focus on the productivity.

That thought got me started thinking on a very curious subject. It is very important to have the right people, then put in the right process and use the right technology on top. Now in India Healthcare is run by a motley crew of people who may not be the right people for the job. Healthcare does not attract the kind of professionals like FMCG or Technology attracts.

The reason no one wants to work in Healthcare is that the pay is not good and with no social security in India, good intentions are not always the best way to run a house.

So till we find a solution to that there is not going to be any good people to build the process on which technology can act….

So till then we will languish at the bottom 5 in the world for the foreseeable future….
