The internet has revolutionized consumer choices like never before. Traditional retail stores have discovered the potential of online shopping. Taxis are booked through apps and food is ordered over a click of a button. One can compare products, prices and the best stores in a blink. And in Bengaluru, services such as Medyog are extending the consumer experience from everyday lifestyle choices to critical sectors such as affordable healthcare. Last week I had written about Hospital Ratings, but did you know that you can rate diagnostic labs as well ?

How often have we been advised tests to be conducted at a lab referred by the doctor, irrespective of the cost or the quality? And if left on their own, patients are hounded by questions like where do they go to conduct the test, which diagnostic center is better, how much would it cost and so on.

Why India needs something like the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge to drive health awareness ?

I call it the “Gangnam Style” of healthcare.

Whether on Facebook or on You Tube the one phenomenon you cant get away from is the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge.

ALS or Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS)—also referred to as motor neurone disease (MND), Charcot disease, and, in the United States, Lou Gehrig‘s disease—is a neurodegenerative disease with various causes. It is characterised by muscle spasticity, rapidly progressive weakness due to muscle atrophy, difficulty in speaking (dysarthria), swallowing (dysphagia), and breathing (dyspnea). Why India needs more patient engagement and experience channels ?

Patient engagement and experience in India continues to be a back burner despite our progress in healthcare and medical facilities. If one looks at the US, Canada , Europe or Japan there are many patient engagement portals that provide information, build communities and enhance the experience of patients suffering from a certain disease as well as the patient parties that are affected.

Did you know that almost 26 million babies are born in India every year. That’s like adding a new Venezuela to our population every year. As most of the population is based in the rural areas, almost 60-70 % of these babies and their mothers would not have access to proper care before birth. This includes the ultra sound scans that those of us in the urban areas consider apart of the pregnancy monitoring healthcare system.
