When two families walked into Medicover Hospital, Navi Mumbai, they were fighting against time. Both husbands were battling end-stage liver disease and urgently needed a liver transplant. Their wives stepped forward with courage, each willing to donate a part of their liver. However, there was one major obstacle — their blood groups didn’t match those of their husbands.
For most, this would have been the end of the road. But at Medicover Hospital, under the leadership of Dr Sharan Narute, Director – Liver Transplant and HPB Surgery, a rare and complex solution was found: a swap liver transplant.
What is a Swap Liver Transplant?
A swap liver transplant is a procedure in which two families facing incompatible blood groups or organ size challenges agree to exchange donors. Each donor gives part of their liver to a patient from another family, creating the right match and saving both lives. It’s a complex process that requires medical precision, flawless planning, and immense trust between families and healthcare teams.
Why This Case Was Unique
This was not a routine transplant. The Medicover team had to overcome several challenges:
- Four simultaneous surgeries were performed across four operating theatres. Both donors and both recipients were operated on at the same time to ensure fairness, reduce surgical risk, and minimise liver preservation time.
- Unusual anatomy: Both donors had two portal veins, requiring complex vascular reconstruction. This made the surgery more demanding and required exceptional surgical skill.
- Extended surgery time: Each procedure lasted 10–12 hours, demanding stamina, focus, and close collaboration between surgeons, anaesthetists, ICU teams, and nursing staff.
The Outcome
Despite the complexity, the procedures were a success. Both recipients recovered steadily and were discharged in just 11 days. The donors recovered even faster, regaining their strength within a week.
What could have been a tragic ending became a story of survival and hope, thanks to the determination of the families and the expertise of Medicover’s transplant team.
Why It Matters
Swap liver transplants are rare in India. They require not only surgical skill but also:
- Institutional readiness: Multiple operating theatres, advanced blood bank support, and intensive care units.
- Family counselling: Donor families must understand the risks, benefits, and long-term implications of recovery.
- Strong medical ethics: Ensuring fairness, informed consent, and transparency throughout the process.
Medicover Hospital, Navi Mumbai, demonstrated how courage and coordination can turn the most challenging circumstances into life-saving success stories.
A Message of Hope
This story highlights the importance of organ donation and the significance of timely medical intervention. With liver disease on the rise in India and donor shortages still a challenge, swap transplants can offer a ray of hope to families who would otherwise have no options.
As Dr Sharan Narute and his team showed, when medical expertise meets compassion, even the rarest and most difficult procedures can succeed.
